Valuing the Sheep

May 5, 2020

May 5.  Sheep stealing is a historical reality and still a very common thing in parts of the country, especially border areas.  One farmer said he had stopped farming with sheep because of the seriousness of this problem.  It is also true that little concern appears to be shown for the sheep themselves which are seen as just a commodity for food or wool or to be killed and sacrificed. That must be quite different from how Jesus describes his relationship with his sheep, caring for them and even going out to search for one that went missing.

Jesus said,” My Father who has given them to me is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.”   John 10:22-30.

Pope Francis: An evangelizing community gets involved by word and deed in people’s daily lives; it bridges distances, it is willing to abase itself if necessary, and it embraces human life, touching the suffering flesh of Christ in others. Evangelizers thus take on the “smell of the sheep” and the sheep are willing to hear their voice.  EG24. Offer a prayer to Our Lady.
