REFLECTIONS extracts from Ubuntu Family Thoughts for the Day May 2018

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. May 19th Day 7: Building family in household and church.  Pray for the Presbyterian/Congregational churches

Prayer. Gracious God, you sent your son to be born in an ordinary family with ancestors who were both faithful and sinful.   We ask your blessing upon all families within households and communities.  We pray especially for the unity of the Christian family so that the world may believe.  In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

The right hand of God is writing in our land, writing with power and with love; Our conflicts and our fears, our triumphs and our tears, are recorded by the right hand of God.

May 20th Pentecost. Day 8:  He will gather the dispersed… from the four corners of the earth.     Pray for the Baptist/Pentecostal churches.

Prayer.   Lord, we humbly ask that, by your grace, the churches throughout the world may become instruments of your peace. Through their joint action as ambassadors and agents of your healing, reconciling love among divided peoples, may your Name be hallowed and glorified. Amen.

The right hand of God is planting in our land, planting seeds of freedom, hope and love; in these many-peopled lands let his children all join hands, and be one with the right hand of God.  Caribbean Hymn of Christian Unity

May 20th  Pentecost B.  Fr George shared how in his family around Pentecost they would all reflect on the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit and consider and share what they saw in each other. “That was a real ubuntu activity as I see it now. One year I was credited with kindness, maybe that was because I had tried hard to practise self-control. It would be a very nice thing for you all to do in your own families. We have an activity in our Sunday bulletin today.”

When the day of Pentecost had come they were all together in one place.  And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared  to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them.  Acts 2:1-2   There are varieties of gifts but the same spirit and they are gifts of service but the same Lord.  To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. Just as the body is one and has many members and all the members are one body so it is with Christ.  Cor 12:4, 12.    Pope Francis:  The Holy Spirit knows well what is needed in every time and place. This is what it means to be mysteriously fruitful! EG 280

May 22nd.   Joy.   We hear a lot nowadays in motivational and coaching classes about passion and how one should have passion for one’s work ideals. We also see around us how passionate people can be about their cause, whether it is protesting about unemployment or student fees. Passion can lead to action. But there are negative passions too, anger, envy and greed that make us insensitive to other’s needs.

Is it not your passions that are at war in your members?   James 4:1-10   Pope Francis: To let go of anger wrath, violence and revenge are necessary conditions to living joyfully. FM 9
