June THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY are built on the theme YOUTH MATTER. Pope Francis quotations are from his letter after the Synod for Youth Christus Vivit.
June 7th . How do you test someone’s love? The boys tended to think that a girl should be willing to sleep with them. The girls thought that a boy could show he loves her by respecting her and that her “no” means “no” and that there could still be a real friendship and honest communication.
Jesus said to Peter a third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me.” Peter was grieved because he asked him the third time. John 21:15-19.. Pope Francis: “All the faithful, whatever their condition or state, are called by the Lord, each in his or her own way, to that perfect holiness by which the Father himself is perfect”. The first thing we need to discern and discover is this: Jesus wants to be a friend to every young person. In the risen Lord’s dialogue with Simon Peter, his great question was: “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” (Jn 21:16). In other words, do you love me as a friend? The mission that Peter received to shepherd Jesus’ flock will always be linked to this freely given, gratuitous love. CV249-250
June 9th. Sunday Pentecost. Although Mary-Anne had looked forward to her Confirmation and had been faithful in attending all the classes she found the experience nice but also quite disappointing. “It somehow didn’t touch me at the time but when a year later I participated in a Life in the Spirit seminar I was deeply moved. I wonder why?” she asked. “Is it because I was older and more mature, more receptive, or was the setting more spiritual, more open to the Spirit? Did others experience the same?”
The Counsellor the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. John 14: 23-26 Pope Francis: In these three truths – God loves you; Christ is your Saviour; and he is alive! – we see God the Father and Jesus. Wherever the Father and the Son are, there too is the Holy Spirit. Are you seeking powerful emotions? You will not experience them by accumulating material things, spending money, chasing desperately after the thrills of this world. They will come, and in a much more beautiful and meaningful way, if you allow yourself to be prompted by the Holy Spirit. CV 130.
June 10th. Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church. At their regular Sunday evening meeting on the eve of the feast of Mary, Mother of the Church the youth group considered Mary’s place in their lives. “I know she is a mother,” Portia said, “but I’ve never ever considered what it was like for her as a young girl, to be visited by an angel, asked to be a mother, the mother of God, and have to make such an important decision and such a commitment. It must have awesome.” “I wonder if she asked her mom?” Joan added. “I’ve been taught to see her as a special mother for me.” Jack shared. “What about this new feast as Mother of the Church? So we all have to share her.”
Gospel Acclamation. O happy Virgin, you gave birth to the Lord; O blessed mother of the Church, you warm our hearts with the Spirit of your Son Jesus Christ. Pope Francis: The assurance of young Mary’s “yes “, the commitment in those words, “be it done” with which she answered the angel inspire us. This was no merely passive or resigned acceptance, or a faint “yes”, as if to say, “Well, let’s give it a try and see what happens”. Mary was determined; she knew what was at stake and she said “yes” without thinking twice, a “yes” of someone prepared to take a risk, ready to stake everything she had. For this reason she is an “influencer”, the “influencer” of God. Her yes and her desire to serve were stronger than any doubts or difficulties. CV 44.
