Mary finished reading the news report.  “Mido Macia, 27, died in police custody in 2013 after being arrested for parking his car on the wrong side of the road, causing a traffic jam. Witnesses told the court that the taxi driver was beaten in his cell after being dragged through the streets of Daveyton behind a police van.  The murder prompted violent protests. It is seen as emblematic of two of South Africa’s biggest scourges, xenophobia towards other African nationals and widespread police brutality as the authorities struggle to cut crime in one of the world’s most violent countries. Footage of the incident, captured on mobile phones in a busy marketplace in Daveyton, a township to the east of Johannesburg, showed Macia vehemently resisting arrest. All eight police officers involved were found guilty.”  “Is this a modern day Good Samaritan story gone bad?” she asked.
