Read Genesis 25-27. Like her mother-in-law Sarah, Isaac’s wife Rebecca was childless until they prayed and God granted them twins. Even before their birth they seemed to be in conflict and Isaac and Rebecca both grew to have favourites, Rebecca loved Jacob and Isaac Esau. Jacob, the younger, with his mother cleverly manipulated Esau into selling his birthright to him. Later when Isaac, nearly blind in his old age, wanted to give his final blessing to his eldest son, Rebecca plotted with Jacob once again to cheat Esau. This deceitful act is condemned by some later biblical writers. it is also said that God can work out his plan of salvation using the sins of people to achieve his own ultimate purpose. Pope Francis: The family is the primary setting for socialisation since it is where we first learn to relate to others. AL275.
Reflect, share and pray. Is there division or favouritsm in our family or do children see it as that? is mother or father the controling one? What can other family moments in the story teach us?
