Land expropriation is a political “hot potato” today as well as an economic one. Churches don’t always get involved, but on behalf of farmers, workers and the whole community we should have a contribution to make. Their focus would be on justice, the common good and best farming practices so as to ensure that sufficient food and sufficiently healthy food is produced.
Jesus taught them in a parable, “A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed some seed fell along the path and the birds came and devoured it. Other seed fell on rocky ground. The seed that was sown on good soil are the ones who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, 30-fold, 60-fold and 100-fold. Mark 4:1-20.
Pope Francis. In assessing the environmental impact of a project, few careful studies are made of its impact on biodiversity, as if the loss of species of animal and plant groups is of little importance. When species are exploited commercially little attention may be paid to their reproductive systems and an imbalance of the ecosystem. LS35.
