Counting the Cost. Family Thought 23rd Sunday C 8 September

Brother Vincent, the youth leader, was asked to address the congregation. ‘Is the way we follow Jesus a cultural kind of thing and was Jesus speaking figuratively when he told the people they had to hate everything and leave everything and count the cost of being his follower? It is not so hard to give up everything if you haven’t got any close family or any possessions and so become a religious priest, brother or sister. But if you do have important people, maybe a husband or a child you do have to count the cost and decide what it will mean for you to be a disciple, to put Jesus and his values first and not be more attached to things even when you are living in the world. I had to make quite a hard choice.”

Jesus said, “If any one comes to me and does not hate his own father, mother, wife and children, brothers and sister and even his own life cannot be my disciple. Which of you desiring to build a tower does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?

Pope Francis: When human beings fail to find their true place in this world they misunderstand themselves and end up acting against themselves. Not only has God given the earth to man, to use it and respect it for the original good purpose, but man too is God’s gift to man. LS 115
