Vincent continued explaining that Daniel, as considered the wisest man in the kingdom, interpreted a dream of King Nebuchadnezzar.  He dreamed of a series of kingdoms with himself being the mightiest and first kingdom, depicted as having a head of gold.  Other kingdoms described in various ways would arise and destroy one another until finally “the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed, not shall its sovereignty be left to another people.  It shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an end.  Daniel 2.  Clearly throughout the centuries right up to today wars have been fought over land and power by kings and empires while their people were oppressed and enslaved. Again the message of the dream was of hope and a glorious future for the persecuted Jews of the time.

Pope Francis: The Gospel is about the kingdom of God, about loving God who reigns in our world. To the extent that he reigns within us, the life of society will be a setting for universal fraternity, justice, peace and dignity.   EG 180
