AUTUMN’S PROMISE
Autumn is still a season of promise
not merely the peeling of the farewell gong.
For every creature in God’s creation
autumn’s fingers creep over us once in every year.
The searing heat of summer ends.
The joys of the fullness of maturity have been celebrated
and begin to fade.
The flowers and fruits relinquish their bright dominance.
They have given themselves in their glory,
so often hardly noticed,
hardly appreciated with gratitude.
For us the creatures in God’s creation
autumn creeps over us somewhere along life’s course.
The bright energy of summer flags.
The joys of the fullness of maturity have been celebrated
and begin to fade,
We relinquish our bright dominance.
We have given ourselves in our glory,
so often hardly noticed,
hardly appreciated with gratitude.
And yet
What is maturity, of the year or of the years?
What is the promise of autumn?
The cosmos flowers only spread their glory
in the autumn of the year.
There are flowers, fruits, so many other creatures
that appear not to reach the autumn of their days,
their life cut short before its apparent span.
Is their autumn only a moment,
a brief glance back over their shoulder
at the glory they have spread?
Is maturity not a task of every season
to have been ourselves and given ourselves in glory,
often hardly noticed,
hardly appreciated with gratitude?
Is that autumn’s promise……………and gift?
