September Reflections: A Sporting Tradition
Filed under Calendar and ReflectionsSep 1Introduction
Some families are very involved in sport, some not at all. In some families everyone plays a different sport while in others they all play tennis or have another common interest. Gym is common nowadays too and is very good for one’s health. In today’s society with cell phones, TV and computers families have to make an extra effort to take an interest in sport and physical wellbeing. It is especially valuable if they can do some outdoor activities together. “Couch rugby” is no substitute for the real thing. What kind of sporting tradition exists in your family? Could you do more?5th 23rd Sunday. Social Communications Sunday. Christ who gave up everything for our sake. In the first reading we read, “It is hard to work out what is on earth, laborious to know what lies within our reach.” Our modern means of communication are a source of knowledge and information but not always of wisdom. We need the Holy Spirit as much as ever to discern where our true destiny lies.
8th Birthday of Our Lady. Everyone loves birthdays and we celebrate them in many ways with big presents or little ones. Give Mary a big present of family love on her birthday.
12th 24th Sunday. Christ who welcomes sinners. The parable of the Forgiving Father or the Prodigal Son is wellknown. At times we fit into both of those roles. In sports and other activities do we ever cheat? Do we every need to grant or ask forgiveness in our families too? The story can be acted out or applied in our own families as an opportunity for reconciliation.
15th Our Lady of Sorrows. This is one of many feastdays of Mary but one that many families can relate to as we all experience the pain of hurt and disappointment in simple and big ways, even just in losing a game.
19th 25th Sunday. The parable of the dishonest servant can be confusing as he is praised for his astuteness in “feathering his own nest.” When the time comes for judgement however the words of Jesus count. “You cannot be slave of two masters, of God and of money.” How are we keeping the balance correct in our own family? Pray for courage to do what is right and fair.
24th Heritage Day SA. On this day our South African heritage is celebrated. It is also good to look into our own family history. Who are the heroes and for what are they honoured and respected? Are we establishing good traditions and rituals in our own family that can be looked back to with pride in the future?
26th 26th Sunday of the Year C. Behold the Man. Jesus stood before Pilate as a witness for the truth. This is often shown in commitment to justice and to addressing the inequality between rich and poor. Sport today is a way of good healthy enjoyment but has also become a way of striving for fame and wealth without care for others. Pray for yourselves and for all sportsmen and women that they may be generous in their concern for others.
29th Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, archangels as messengers from God show us God’s power and concern. Invite them to join us in prayer for our needs.
