    Introduction

Sport is not only for the young and fit. Even older people can and need to keep as fit as possible and play what sport they can. They need to play their part in the game of life and so avoid becoming frustrated and irritable. They can look back on the many sporting events they have witnessed and share with the young how things have changed and grown.
Discuss and share. In how many ways are the olden days better or not? Are we tolerant of one another across the generations?

4th 14th Sunday of the Year C. Christ our Peace. In the gospel of the day we read how Jesus sent out the 72 disciples in pairs to spread his message of “Peace to this house.” Couples are sent in pairs too and be grateful for grandparents especially for those who might still be together after many years and the peace and joy they have spread through their game of life.

6th St Maria Goretti was a young girl in 19th century Italy who resisted rape and was killed by attacker who was a young man she knew. Pray together that the scourge of rape and sexual violence can be overcome through the good example of our older men to the boys of today.

11th 15th Sunday of the Year C. The Word is Near. The parable of the Good Samaritan teaches us what a neighbour should be. Our nearest neighbours are those in our own homes and families. Are older persons playing the game fairly and are they being treated fairly? Pray for an increase in respect for one another across the generations.
As the World Soccer Cup ends today thank God for the gift of our bodies that enable us to play sport and provide enjoyment to others, old and young.

18th 16th Sunday of the Year C. Jesus our Friend. In the gospel we hear how different people relate to Jesus and he to them in different ways. We all play the game of life differently. Older people can look back on how they have played. Think of ways to befriend and help older people in their needs.

25th 17th Sunday. Our Father in Heaven. At Mass the Lord’s Prayer is always introduced with the words, ”with confidence let us pray…” The father-figure is important and respected in all cultures, especially as they grow older. Sometimes he is feared more that he is loved, but ideally the way grandfathers have lived their lives should be a model for the young. Teach children the true meaning and value of the Our Father as a family prayer and pray it often together at home.

26th St Joachim and St Anne. The little we know of the grandparents of Jesus comes from tradition and shows how the Church does cherish this relationship as important for family life. Spend some time visiting grandparents, making contact with them or praying for them if they are already deceased. Thank them for the game of life they have been able to play.

29th St Martha. St Martha, the sister of Lazarus and Mary is a model of the woman who works to provide for her family and others. Show gratitude to the women in the different sodalities who are generous in giving of themselves for others and are often torn between giving and meeting their own needs.
